During another month on the island Hrísey in the north of Iceland in March 2025 a series of animal works arose which laid the ground for ongoing work.
Sheep in Icelandic Landscape
The sheep started to interest me at first when I had the chance to attend a réttir in Iceland. It has an indispensable place for human existence and survival in Iceland since the 9th century when settlers from Norway brought it to Iceland. Apart from that, it spends long periods in summer independently and knows how to survive in the landscape of the mountains and the Icelandic rough and unpredictable weather conditions. I have been told that within a specific breed there are certain outstanding individuals who have special leading qualities and a high intelligence and knowledge to navigate.
In this series I used abstract watercolor works I had painted during the past months and in different places in Iceland as a background for the sheep.
The sheep is always the same sheep. The structures may evoke images of landscapes and display the sheep in different surroundings and different situations.
